Khamenei also responded to Trump's tweet of February 3, when the USA president said: "Iran is playing with fire - they don't appreciate how "kind" President Obama was to them".

During the speech, Khamenei called on called Iranians to take part in demonstrations on Friday, the anniversary of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, to show they were not frightened of U.S. "threats".

"No enemy can paralyse the Iranian nation", Khamenei said in a meeting with military commanders in Tehran. "The Iranian people will respond to his words on February 10 and will show their stance against such threats", Iran's top authority said. Khamenei cited a 5-year old Iranian detained for hours at a US airport following Trump's immigration ban as a case that "belies the American version of human rights".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also criticised Trump on Tuesday, saying the nuclear deal was a "win-win" that saw Tehran curb its nuclear ambitions in return for the lifting of sanctions.

One focus was on the Iran Nuclear Deal which aims to prevent Iran from producing a nuclear bomb. Iran said the test launches are a matter of sovereignty and security rather than a signal intended for Trump, who had tweeted that Iran was "playing with fire".

Iran has shown little in the way of cooperating with the UN's wishes, nor that of its nuclear agreement with the Obama administration. "I think it's too hard to tell based on what we know".

By then, Van der Westhuizen had been confined to a wheelchair after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2011. He was inducted in the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007 and later to the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2014.

"The amateur and irrational policies of the new United States administration will change nothing about the principles of Iranian politics", said a statement from Iran's Foreign Ministry quoted by the UK Independent. Khamenei said. "He was the president who imposed paralyzing sanctions on the Iranian nation". Earlier this week, Fox News reported that Iranian-backed Houthi rebels launched an attack against a Saudi warship off the coast of Yemen.

Khamenei blasted Trump days after he imposed new sanctions against Iran over its development of ballistic missiles.

As an example, he pointed to Russian-led negotiations in Kazakhstan aimed at firming up a shaky Syrian ceasefire and paving the way for the revival of peace talks to end that country's almost six-year civil war.

Iran offered varying statements on the nature and intent of its ballistic missile program in the the missile tests.

After blocking USA citizens from entering Iran, a response to Trump's immigration ban, Iran is testing missiles in open defiance of US sanctions.

Iran has conducted such tests a few times a year, usually with a token response from the United States complaining about them.
