The Taiwan-based China News Agency (CNA) added that 200 fire-fighters and 20 ambulances had been deployed to the crash site. These include closer monitoring of tour bus drivers' performance and tightening the screws regulating the industry within a month.

Thirty people, including the driver and a tour guide, were pronounced dead at the scene, the police highways department said.

According to the local media reports, the top of the bus had been torn-off due to the impact of the accident and its occupants were tossed onto the roadside.

It said numerous passengers were trapped inside. The passengers, all Taiwanese and mostly senior citizens, were on their way back to Taipei after a day trip to view cherry blossoms at Wuling Farm in central Taiwan. "When the bus turned into a road curve, all of a sudden it tilted towards the right against the hill and suddenly everyone was shouting".

It was unclear what caused the crash.

Dashcam footage reportedly from a vehicle behind the bus shows it turning off the main highway onto an adjoining road.

She added: 'I respect peaceful protest, and I will not be deterred in executing the vital mission of the Department of Education. DeVos was confirmed by the narrowest possible margin-a tied vote in the Senate broken by Vice President Mike Pence.

The bus carrying 44 people was left flipped over on the side of the road and around 100 rescuers rushed to the scene. Police are still trying to decipher whether the bus was speeding at that time.

"(Police) do not rule out that possibility the bus driver was tired due to long hours of work". All of the deceased were reported as Taiwan nationals.

Cabinet spokesman Hsu Kuo-yung said victims' families would each receive NT$6 million (US$193,000) in compensation.

The crash is the latest accident involving tour buses in Taiwan.

Numerous injured were older passengers, local television reported.
