The National Weather Service has issued a lake effect snow warning for an area that includes all of Kenosha County.

The NWS points out that not all areas will experience lake effect snow but adds that it's hard to predict where significant accumulate will occur. After dark, chance of snow will drop to about 30%, with a low near 15 degrees, NWS said.

Flight cancelations are reported at Chicago airports as much of IL gets snow as part of a storm hitting the Midwest and beyond. Before Monday, the last snowfall greater than an inch during this unseasonably warm winter occurred on December 17 when 1.7 inches accumulated in Chicago.

The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network reported one inch of new snow was reported early Monday in the City of LaPorte and 1.5 inches in Trail Creek and Kingsbury. Lake-effect snow develops when sufficiently cold air blows across the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, but this usually happens when winds are from the northwest. The snow is expected to begin after 8 p.m. Sunday and continuing through Monday, with moderate snow at times during the morning. Visibility can vary and change within minutes.

It's what I refer to a "reverse lake effect".

The Chicago area could see its largest snowfall since before Christmas, with several inches of snow expected Monday.

The advisory in La Porte County is in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Lake Michigan's lake-effect snows, therefore, usually fall in northwest in and southwestern Michigan. Hazardous conditions for Small Craft are likely.
