Uber has paused its self-driving auto program while it investigates a crash involving one of its driverless vehicles in Arizona. She added that the company suspended its self-driving cars in Arizona, Pittsburg, and Pennsylvania, expected to be back on the road soon.

Earlier this month the SAVe Campaign asked eighteen automakers and developers of self-driving cars, including Uber, to take responsibility for failures in their automated and autonomous vehicle technology.

The spokeswoman said because of this, the company felt confident in putting the cars back on the road while it investigates the collision in Arizona.

An Uber spokeswoman said "we are continuing to look into this incident and can confirm we had no backseat passengers in the vehicle".

In this Monday, Sept. 12, 2016, photo, a group of self-driving Uber vehicles position themselves to take journalists on rides during a media preview at Uber's Advanced Technologies Center in Pittsburgh. As is standard procedure, a driver was behind the wheel of the self-driving auto. Others that have been developing the technology longer, including Waymo, Google's self-driving vehicle company, have been hesitant to put ordinary people in their cars without further testing.

Friday night's crash was blamed on the driver of an oncoming SUV that turned left in front of the Uber vehicle carrying two test drivers and no passengers.

They are not required to track crashes like the one that occurred in Tempe on Friday or report any information to the state. In addition to its global ride-hailing service, Uber has been testing its self-driving vehicle technology on public roads in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and California for several months.

To some extent, Pittsburgh is where Uber's whole self-driving experiment began, and where it continues today. But if Uber finds a way to dominate in the development of self-driving cars, it can remove those costly human drivers from its business model-a scenario that could mean a windfall for Uber.

In December, the DMV in California prohibited Uber from testing its autonomous vehicles in San Francisco after failing to get a permit. Neither driver was seriously injured, according to police.

According to local station ABC-15, a Volvo XC90 used by Uber in self-driving mode was hit by another vehicle, which failed to yield.

The incident also comes as Uber, and Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick, are now under scrutiny because of a series of scandals. But in February 2016, a Waymo test vehicle struck a public bus near the company's headquarters in Mountain View, California.
