Quakes crack buildings, panic tourists in Philippine town

The magnitude 5.6 natural disaster that jolted Batangas anew around 3:07 p.m. on Saturday has temporarily stranded passengers and stalled cargoes bound for neighboring Mindoro island.

Tingloy, an island-town near Mabini, was some seven kilometers near of the epicenter of a magnitude 5.5 quake that hit Batangas last April 5.

Two minutes later came the magnitude 6 quake.

Local television network ABS CBN broadcast images of passengers rushed to leave the Batangas International Port, which is near the epicentre of the earthquakes.

Landslides have been reported falliing from Mount Maculot, close to the where the quakes hit in Batangas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) later reported different readings, but putting the strongest temblor at a magnitude of 6.

However, Phivolcs said the origin of the natural disaster is also near the local fault along Mabini, Batangas.

According to Phivolcs, the first two tremors generated Intensity VII in Mabini and Intensity VI in the municipalities of Calatagan, Nasugbu and Tingloy, all in Batangas.

Intensity 5 was recorded at Batangas City, Lemery and Sto. Clara also in Batangas City collapsed while around 21 houses in Bauan, Batangas were damaged.

In Quezon, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Action Officer Henry Buzar said the province felt a 2.8 magnitude shaker at 3:09 p.m., 2.9 magnitude at 3:10 p.m. and 2.7 magnitude at 3:11 p.m. "It is not at all related [to any big earthquakes]", he said.

Apart from the church, the municipal building also suffered a crack on the right side.

"We have not monitored any incident of that nature", Eleazar said in a text message.

Mall tenants and mall goers at SM Lucena and Pacific Mall Lucena were evacuated to the parking area.

Luces said one was reported injured from the quake - a male worker of a glass and aluminum shop who sustained injuries from broken glass.
