Pence has called North Korea's failed missile launch a "provocation", and President Donald Trump tweeted Sunday that China is working with the USA on the "North Korea problem". "It seems longer than the existing KN-08 or KN-14 ICBMs", a South Korean military official told Yonhap, after the intercontinental ballistic missiles along with the Pukkuksong-2 SLBMs were paraded in front of the country's leader, Kim Jong-un.

The DMZ is a heavily mined 4-kilometers-wide strip that separates the two Koreas.

Vice President Mike Pence is opening his trip to the Asia-Pacific region amid increasing tensions in North Korea over the regime's nuclear and missile programs.

The missile failure also came hours ahead of a visit by US Vice President Mike Pence to South Korea where the North's weapons programme will top the agenda.

"But the era of strategic patience is over", Pence said.

A North Korean missile exploded during launch on Sunday, U.S. and South Korean officials said.

Some have said Trump's aggressive military action is delaying a nuclear test.

While the North did not conduct a nuclear test, the spectre of a potential test and an escalated US response has trailed Pence as he undertakes his Asian tour.

On Sunday, U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said the problem with North Korea "is coming to a head".

Imposing an oil embargo, a global ban on North Korea's airline, intercepting the country's cargo ships and punishing Chinese banks doing business with Pyongyang are some of the options that American officials say are on the agenda.

The bottom line, McMaster said, is to stop the North's weapons development and make the Korean Peninsula nuclear-free.

Pence said the visit was "particularly humbling for me" as his father fought in the Korean War.

In Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, speaking to a parliamentary session Monday, said: "Needless to say, diplomatic effort is important to maintain peace".

Tension had escalated sharply in the region amid concerns that the reclusive North may soon conduct a sixth nuclear test or a ballistic missile test launch timed with the April 15 anniversary it calls the "Day of the Sun".

Pyongyang, already under a raft of sanctions for its missile and nuclear programs, says it is developing arms as deterrence against the U.S., which has been deploying advanced weaponry to the South for quite some time now.

The U.S. officials expressed doubt about how much farther China is willing to go to pressure its defiant North Korean ally - despite Beijing's increasing frustration with Pyongyang's missile launches and nuclear tests.

Considering that Syria's lack of nuclear weapons may have been a factor in the USA decision to attack the air base, North Korea seems unlikely to respond to a US nuclear threat by giving up its own nuclear weapons. North Korea is thought to have a small arsenal of atomic bombs and an impressive array of short- and medium-range missiles.

He said "we need to apply pressure on North Korea so they seriously respond to a dialogue" with the global community.

However, Sky News reports that the missile was launched from land, according to USA officials.

There is a reason no president has pulled the trigger on North Korea, and that's because of the "20 million people in Seoul that would be a target", said Panetta.

So who is more realistic, the Trump administration, which says all options are on the table, or the US experts and former officials who say the military option is not?

The Trump administration is hoping that China will help rein in North Korea in exchange for other considerations.

"Why would I call China a currency manipulator when they are working with us on the North Korean problem? We will see what happens!"

"This morning's provocation from the North is just the latest reminder of the risks each one of you face every day in the defense of the freedom of the people of South Korea and the defense of America in this part of the world".

However, one of the 10 balloons fell in a South Korean apartment complex in Goyang, north of Seoul, at 6:30 a.m., police said, adding the complex was about 20 km away from the Gimpo mountain.

Earlier this week, the USA dispatched ships, including an aircraft carrier, to waters off the Korean Peninsula, drawing condemnation from Pyongyang that is already indignant about annual U.S.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, including two previous year.
