Republican lawmakers refused to consider Barack Obama's nominee to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative, who died in February a year ago.

Gorsuch, 49, is now the youngest Supreme Court justice, and Republicans hope that he will tip the majority back to conservatives, as was often the case with Scalia on the bench.

Justice Neil Gorsuch is thanking his former law clerks, family and friends as he is sworn into the Supreme Court during a White House ceremony.

As I watched the incredible dignity of President Trump, Justice Anthony Kennedy, and now-Justice Gorsuch, I realized how 'President Trump has exceeded my expectations.

On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell triggered a legislative manoeuvre known as the "nuclear option" when Republicans lacked the 60 votes required to end debate on Mr Gorsuch. The Republican majority in Congress made it hard for former US President Barack Obama to appoint a replacement for Scalia in hopes that a Republican president would be elected to appoint a conservative judge - as indeed happened.

Scalia had anchored the court's conservative wing for almost three decades before he died unexpectedly in February 2016.

Gorsuch's 66-day confirmation process was swift but bitterly divisive. "I promise you that I will do all my powers permit to be a faithful servant of the Constitution and laws of this great nation", he said.

"Justice Gorsuch, you are now entrusted with the sacred duty of defending our Constitution", Trump said. Scalia's most notorious action was the court ruling in Bush v. Gore, which suppressed the recounting of ballots in Florida after the 2000 presidential election and awarded the White House to Bush.

But when it comes to the selection of a Supreme Court justice who will attack the democratic rights of working people and uphold the privileges of corporations and billionaires, the Democrats roll over meekly, after a "struggle" that was purely for show.

For now, Gorsuch restores the court's conservative shift. Justice Clarence Thomas, who joined the court in 1991, said White told him: "Well, Clarence, in your first five years you wonder how you got here".

The White House swearing-in ceremony is a departure from recent history.

Curt Levey, president at the Committee for Justice, said he would like to see the court consider the Second Amendment issue now that Justice Gorsuch fills out the court at nine justices.

Scalia had anchored the court's conservative wing for almost three decades before he died in February 2016. The prize noted the enduring friendship between the justices despite their ideological differences.
