Then, Arturo Vidal was controversially dismissed, and in extra time, an offside Cristiano Ronaldo scored what proved to be the decisive goal of his hat trick in what had been an enthralling match.

The balance of a topsy-turvy tie turned Madrid's way again with five minutes remaining as just as in the first leg, Bayern were reduced to 10 men when Vidal saw a second yellow card for chopping down Asensio.

Ronaldo scored the next goal in the 105th minute from a clear offside position, and then sent Madrid 3-2 up on the night when fractionally offside.

Real Madrid players react during the Champions League quarterfinal second leg soccer match between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, Spain, Tuesday April 18, 2017. In a quarter-final you have to have a referee with more quality, I think. "It goes both ways, that is football", said Zidane.

With the game heading towards extra-time Vidal was sent off for a second booking after appearing to win the ball cleanly from Asensio.

A hat-trick took the Portuguese to 100 goals in Champions League competition, helping to further cement his status as an all-time great.

Ronaldo had the first opportunity in extra-time, but Neuer in the Bayern goal parried away his swerving strike from distance.

"We were really made to suffer, but ultimately we are in the semi-finals", Isco told reporters.

What New Yorkers don't like about the new free tuition scholarship
He backed the exclusion up by arguing that tuition at New York's private colleges is much higher than at public institutions. With tuition expected to be free this fall for CUNY and SUNY schools, there has been mixed reaction from different parties.

"To score six goals against a team like Bayern Munich isn't easy, so we deserved to go through", added Ronaldo.

Barcelona face the Serie A giants in the second leg of their quarter-final, trailing 3-0 from the first leg.

Play ebbed and flowed in the added 30 minutes despite the numerical discrepancy, with Neuer saving from Ronaldo and Asensio while Douglas Costa, seemingly overlooking Joshua Kimmich free in the box, wasted a glorious counter for Bayern.

Not long before the penalty, Marcelo had prevented Bayern from scoring by making a goal line clearance after a shot by Robben had beaten Navas.

The penalty was awarded after a foul by Casemiro on Arjen Robben.

Ronaldo equalised in the 76th minute when a ideal lofted pass from Casemiro found him. He's one of the best players in the world, and he's now the first player to have 100 goals in the Champions League.

However that goal was too criticised by viewers for being offside.

Security guards and Bayern fans got into a confrontation at the stands at halftime but the altercation ended quickly.
