Responding troopers spotted Stephens leaving the restaurant in Erie and went after him, bumping his vehicle to try to get it to stop, authorities said.

Stephens drove off, leading police on a short chase. "The minute he turned out on Buffalo Road, the state police were right behind him at that point, so he couldn't have gotten more than 100 yards before the police were behind him".

"As the officers approached that vehicle Steve Stephens took his own life", Williams said. He shot and killed himself after his auto spun out and came to a stop.
