Donald Trump threatens Canada over milk imports

Gov. Scott Walker says he spoke with President Donald Trump about the almost 40 Wisconsin dairy farmers desperately seeking help after being dropped by their milk buyer following a Canadian policy change.

What's more in the New York Times report, the signing of an executive order would start a six month, formal notification period where renegotiations could be discussed. And next Monday, when the contracts run out, at least 75 farmers will be faced with too much milk and not enough buyers.

WMMB reached out to consumers and businesses around the state with a full-page ad in 15 newspapers on April 23, encouraging them to take these actions to support the dairy farm community.

Trump on Tuesday morning took a swing at Canada's milk-pricing policies, which he argued effectively blocked United States exports from the Canadian market and put American farmers at a disadvantage.

He later added, "Canada, what they've done to our dairy farm workers, is a disgrace".

Adding to the groundswell of recognition that Canada's protectionist dairy policies are harmful to USA dairy exports, a bipartisan group of 68 members of the House of Representatives wrote to President Donald Trump yesterday urging him to insist that Canada comply with its dairy trade commitments, including those under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The letter cited the importance of exports to the US dairy industry, noting that approximately 15 percent of USA milk production amounting to roughly $5 billion a year leaves the country.

"Things are just kind of starting to fall into place this past week, so I think there's still a chance they can find a home for their milk", he said. He is acting as if Canada has more to lose than the a trade war, but that's a foolish gambit.

O'Leary withdraws from Conservative leadership race: CTV report
In a Wednesday afternoon statement, O'Leary said beating Trudeau in the 2019 election would be a "huge challenge". The party investigated O'Leary's claim and later removed 1,351 names from its membership rolls.

"Not having this to deal with, and the stress, is going to be huge", Senn said.

"The more vocal we can be, the more we can hold Canada's feet to the fire have them change course", he said. Canada has changed its pricing structure which will enable its dairy industry to provide the ultra-filtered milk needed in cheese production. It will be the last day picking up milk from Prosser's farm. "We urge you to exhaust all potential avenues to bring Canada into compliance with its trade commitments". One pricing program, the National Ingredients Strategy, provides incentives for Canadian dairy processors that steer them away from purchasing US products.

"The U.S. president is a classic bully".

Schumer said: "We can all agree that it is critical to level the playing field for our hard-working dairy farmers, and make sure our Canadian neighbors rescind their unfair policy and again play by the rules". More than 70 percent of Mexico's dairy imports come from America.

"While some processors and milk cooperatives are already losing millions of dollars in business, this has the potential of hurting dairy farms across the state", he continued.

"While I am discouraged that the call did not result in a solution to this crisis, I am encouraged that we have initiated an open dialogue, which will be crucial as we work to discover any avenue available to us to assist these farmers".

"We seem to be doing just the opposite", he said.

"It's quite a bit of an improvement from Monday when there were about 45 farms still (without contracts)", Behling said.
