The result gave Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, an FA Cup victor six times, a welcome boost in a season that many supporters would like to be his last at the club.

The Gunners face a battle to qualify for the Champions League, as they now sit seventh and seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

The Gunners achieved the standout result of a hard second half of the season when they ground out a 2-1 extra-time win over City on Sunday to reach a third FA Cup final in four years.

"That is the second time we played this formation and credit to the boys, we have shown the character we have in this team", said midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

"Seeing the Arsenal match (against Manchester City) it didn't look like turmoil to me, there were players fighting and they thoroughly deserved to win in the end, even though it was a close game", Shakespeare said.

Ramsey featured for Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final tie against Premier League rivals City at the Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday afternoon.

Cech won the Premier League and FA Cup four times apiece during a decorated Chelsea career, which also included glory in three EFL Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League before he joined Arsenal in 2015.

They are not qualities often associated with this Arsenal team but Cech says criticism of the players' mentality has been unfair. That is the most important thing and to reach the targets we set together.

City dominated and Sergio Aguero had a seemingly good goal disallowed in the first half after Leroy Sane's cross was ruled to have drifted out of play before falling to the Argentinian.

"Now we need to stand back up and keep going. Then we'll see for the final because if you don't qualify for the Champions League it will be a big loss and a big disappointment".

Arsene Wenger's future may remain up in the air but he is confident Alexis Sanchez will sign a new Arsenal contract this summer. I think he deserves that and hopefully now we can kick on and win it for him. I felt we became stronger.

"The linesman could not see that situation", said Guardiola.
