Passenger dragged from plane reaches settlement with United Airlines

Dr. David Dao has reached an amicable settlement with United Airlines for the injuries he received in his April 9th ordeal, which was captured on video and viewed worldwide.

Dao's lawyers announced the deal Thursday, but did not disclose the financial terms of the settlement.

In the release, Demetrio praised United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz for making things right. The company said Munoz also called Dao directly on "numerous occasions" to offer "heartfelt" apologies.

The settlement announcement comes the same day that United outlined a plan to make its passengers more comfortable and ensure that what happened to Dao won't happen to any one else. But Demetrio said a suit will not be necessary after United accepted complete responsibility for what happened so quickly.

At least three police officers from the Chicago Department of Aviation removed Dao from the aircraft. The flight's crew had reportedly ordered Dao to give up his seat for commuting United Airlines crew members.

Other changes directly related to the incident with Dr. Dao include limiting the use of the use of law enforcement to safety and security issues only and not requiring customers already on the plane to involuntarily give up their seat.

Separately, a Commerce Department report showed consumer spending was unchanged in March, steady for a second straight month. The S&P 500 technology index .SPLRCT was up 0.6 percent - one of only four among the 11 major S&P 500 sectors to post gains.

"We look forward to implementing the improvements we have announced, which will put our customers at the centre of everything we do". Wanting to seat four crew members, the airline offered passengers $400 and later $800 to voluntarily relinquish their seats.

In a new report, the airline called the incident a "defining moment".

United said it will reduce overbooking, particularly on flights with a poor track record of finding volunteers to give up their seats, but won't end the practice.

"He said that being dragged down the aisle was more horrifying and harrowing than what he experienced leaving Vietnam" in 1975 when Saigon fell.

- Sending displaced passengers or crew members to nearby airports, putting them on other airlines or arranging for vehicle transportation to get them to their destinations.

The doctor whose violent dragging from a United airlines flight triggered worldwide outrage has settled with the airline for his injuries.
