On his first leave since joining the Army, he was posted with 2 Rajputana Rifles in Akhnoor in Jammu region.

Defence sources on Thursday said that six militants from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen were involved in the killing of Ummer Fayaz and that a massive manhunt has been launched to catch them.

Stating that there is no place or role of Al-Qaida, Taliban or ISIS in the Kashmir Armed Struggle, conglomerate of local militant outfits, United Jehad Council (UJC) has blamed Indian agencies for the murder of Lieutenant Umar Fayaz. The Army chief said "these people are discouraging Kashmiris from availing job opportunities while thousands of people line up for police recruitment". His bullet-riddled body was found the next morning. He had been fired at from a close range.

He was a brilliant young man who performed in a spectacular manner in the Indian Army, the GOC said after meeting his family here.

The body of Fayaz, who would have turned 23 on June 6, was laid to rest with full military honours in his native village, with hundreds of people attending the funeral. They perpetrate such cruelties without considering if the people are Kashmiri or non-Kashmiri, ' Sehgal told ANI.

He said he has urged the Islamabad High Court to pass an order barring Uzma from leaving Pakistan until legal issues are resolved. Ali rejected the allegations of physical and sexual violence and said Uzma should be medically examined to establish the claims.

Lieutenant General (Retired) VK Chaturvedi who participated in the event said the country has lost a role model. The family was assured of all assistance from the Army and that the perpetrators of this dastardly act would be brought to justice.

The GoC said Fayaz's family is courageous and they have shown hope even in this hour of grief. "(The officer) will continue to inspire the youth from the Kashmir Valley", he tweeted.

Asserting that the deceased officer was an exceptional sportsman, Jaitley said his sacrifice reiterates nation's commitment to eliminate terrorism from the Valley.

Quoting preliminary investigations, a senior police officer had said that a Hizbul Mujahideen module was behind the killing and an INSAS rifle which was snatched from police personnel could have been used in the crime. Except Budgam, which is near Srinagar, all other areas are in south Kashmir, the latest vortex of recent militant activity.
