Unconfirmed reports claimed the bridge caved in when more than 50 people were standing on it to watch the rescue operation of a youth, who had jumped into the river to commit suicide.

According to the sources, the rescue operation is under process and it is being carried out by Navy personnel and the Coast Guard personnel. Meanwhile, the district officials told the media that the body count had gone up to 2 when they had recovered the body of Prakash Ekka, a 28-year-old, hailing from the state of Jharkhand. The search operation had to be called off around midnight on Thursday owing to poor visibility. "Only one person is missing", South Goa District Collector Swapnil Naik told IANS, almost 18 hours after the mishap late on Thursday evening. "However, the divers of the Indian Navy and Drishti Lifesaving Services engaged in the search stopped the operation in the afternoon as they did not find any more bodies", Superintendent of Police (South) Shekhar Prabhudesai said.

Goa's Public Works Department Minister Sudin Dhavalikar on Friday said all Portuguese-era bridges will be audited for their load-bearing capacity.

A Navy spokesperson said nine Navy divers with Geminis boats have been rushed to Curchorem.
