Former NFL player found dead in Indiana river

James Hardy III was identified on Thursday morning after a body was pulled from the Maumee River in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Wednesday according to Fort Wayne's NBC.

WREX sister station WPTA in Fort Wayne says police were called out around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for a body recovery in the Maumee river.

An employee with Fort Wayne's water filtration plant conducting regular rounds discovered the body and notified authorities.

The Cause of Death and the Manner of Death are Pending further investigation. Hep was like a father figure to James, and his passing was something that was hard for Hardy to accept. Hardy focused on football in college but also played basketball for two years.

It was the tragic end of a troubled post-football life for the 33-year-old. But after just one season, he made a decision to switch sports and play football for the school.

A standout at IN who first joined the school to play basketball, Hardy still holds the Hoosiers' records for career receptions, yards and touchdown catches.
