He was subbed out of the game, along with fellow seniors Greg Deichmann and Cole Freeman, after initially taking the field in the bottom of the ninth.

"Caleb Gilbert was the story of this game", Mainieri said.

"We'll be ready", said shortstop Kramer Robertson. We accomplished that goal.

The Tigers will take a 16-game winning streak to the 2017 College World Series. They've also won 21 of 23.

"The train is rolling", he said. "Everyone is playing at a high level right now".

MSU reliever Denver McQuary would also walk the bases loaded to start off the fifth frame and then served up a two-run double to Michael Papierski.

The Tigers would load the bases in the 9th and Robertson would add another RBI as he was hit by a pitch and Cole Freeman would add 2 more runs on an RBI double to add three more runs to their lead. He pitched five and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing no runs on two hits, striking out six.

The two hits he allowed were soft singles up the middle right after entering the game in the third inning. Trey Jolly finished the first inning and balked in LSU's third run in the second inning.

"When he went up to bat with the bases loaded and the crowd stood and cheered, it was reminiscent of 2008 with Blake Dean and the anticipation of the crowd", said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "I think that speaks volumes to our team and speaks volumes to the message that coach likes to portray to us, that no matter how much we're down, no matter how often we're down, that we've always got a chance to battle back". "He minimized the damage and really dominated the game from that point forward".

He drove in three runs and scored two runs.

The game would remain at 4-3 in favor of Mississippi State until the Tigers busted the door open in the fifth inning with six runs.

The win marks LSU's first trip to Omaha since 2015.

Antoine Duplantis shut the door with a single to right field to plate Robertson and Freeman, putting LSU ahead 14-4, but not before the rains came down one last time and put Alex Box Stadium into a delay.

Robertson led off with a single, Freeman walked, Duplantis singled home Robertson and Deichmann singled home Freeman.

The game was delayed 31 minutes from its scheduled 8:04 p.m. start time due to lightning in the area that pushed back pregame warmups. They tacked on five more runs in the ninth to extend the lead to 14-4, the eventual final score.

Senior closer Hunter Newman finished off the victory for the Tigers and earned his spot at the bottom of the dog pile at the end of the game. He hit a sacrifice fly to give LSU the lead for good against Mississippi State on Saturday for a 4-3 lead and then put LSU up 5-4 with a two-RBI double on Sunday. Jake Mangum and Elijah MacNamee followed with run-scoring singles to give MSU a 4-3 lead.
