Scalise was shot in Alexandria, Virginia as congressional Republicans practiced for the annual congressional baseball game. Davis plays catcher on the team.

The games are notable for fostering bi-partisanship and providing a respite from the highly polarized politics of Capitol Hill.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the entire Senate is "deeply saddened" over Wednesday's shooting.

Rodney Davis, who represents the 13th Congressional District in IL, was among the members of Congress practicing at a Virginia baseball field when shots were fired Wednesday, his spokesperson confirmed, but he was not hurt.

"And I think that Republicans and Democrats need to use this day today to stand together and say stop", he continued. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him", the president said. "We have to come together as Americans".

Even so, "violating executive privilege isn't a crime", explained Jens David Ohlin, an associate dean at Cornell Law School . In other words, they say, the President can't use the privilege as a sword in one context and a shield in another.

"Our fearless Capitol police perform a challenging job with incredible skill", Trump said. "America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this shooting".

There are no Illinois Democrats on the men's team.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who was in the batting cage in the outfield as the gunman began firing said the officers' presence prevented a "massacre".

"This was a frightful, senseless act of violence, and we must bring the perpetrator to justice".

House Speaker Paul Ryan echoed similar sentiments in a tweet: "This morning the hearts of the whole House are with @SteveScalise, the courageous Capitol police, staff, and all those who were in harm's way". The FBI and local law enforcement officials say they haven't identified a motive.

Buddy Carter and Rick Allen, as well as South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford are all safe following the shooting at a GOP Congressional baseball practice. "I wish everyone injured a full and speedy recovery".
