U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded to "serious" after he underwent surgery Saturday for injuries sustained in a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice earlier this week, the hospital treating him said in a release.

Democrats easily defeated Republicans 11-2 Thursday in the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game, in an annual tradition that took on renewed importance in the wake of Wednesday's shooting at a GOP baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

Scalise, the No 3 US House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

"The congressman's status remains critical", Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, told reporters.

Scalise has been sedated since he was hospitalized but has recognized and responded to family members.

The hospital also said that Scalise had received "multiple units of blood transfusion" and that he would require additional operations.

Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Mr Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Dr Sava said.

Five people were injured, including MI native Matt Mika and U.S. Rep Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, who remain in critical condition.

Trump acknowledges for first time he's under investigation
Comey said he typed notes describing the conversations because he was anxious Trump "might lie" later about them. Sad!" he wrote . "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great.

For the game, which began in 1909, members of the Senate and House of Representatives donned uniforms representing teams from their constituencies for the game and many topped them with hats from Louisiana State University, Mr Scalise's alma mater, as a tribute.

"By playing tonight, you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy", Trump said. "That is the source of unity, and more than ever, we must embrace it", the president said. "We will provide periodic updates".

"The Congressional Baseball Game has never been about Republicans against Democrats", said Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., in an opinion piece he wrote for CNN.

Speaking today from the White House, President Trump said Scalise's condition- initially announced as "stable" - was "much more hard that people even thought at the time".

Three others were injured by the gunfire from suspected shooter James Hodgkinson, who was killed by police.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers. Two officers were shot, as were congressional aide Zach Barth and lobbyist Matt Mika.

Steve Scalise is "in some trouble", President Trump said Thursday, before adding he's hopeful the House Whip will make a full recovery.
