Boris Johnson calling for end to blockade of Qatar

Reports have emerged of panic buying at supermarkets amid concerns of a food shortage with Qatar dependent on its Gulf neighbours for food imports.

The tiny, oil-rich Gulf state was plunged into a socioeconomic crisis early in June after neighbouring Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates blockaded the country, which they accused of supporting Islamist terrorist groups. Doha denies the charges. It is the worst crisis for the GCC since its creation in 1981.

He added, "When it comes to terrorism, Qatar has never supported terrorism, Qatar does not support terrorism, Qatar will not support terrorism". Turkey assumed responsibility for mediation in order to resolve the crisis as the country is co-chair of Islamic Cooperation Organization summit, the minister noted. "Cutting of food, pharmaceuticals whatever you can think of the country is being squeezed, the airspace is being closed that is what the country is faced with".

Additionally, Qatar Airways is now using longer routes to its European and North American destinations, including direct flights to the world's busiest global airport in Atlanta, after Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt barred Qatari flights from their airspace.

Turkey has also send food stocks, mainly milk, yoghurt and poultry, to Qatar to help the Emirate cope with the shortage of commodities entailed by the blockade.

Qatar's regional rivals insist it funds and supports political Islam, al Qaeda-linked Syrian militias and the Muslim Brotherhood - as well as accusing the small state of being too cosy with Iran, the Shia regional superpower.

Qatar and Iran share the largest underwater natural gas field in the world.

The new flights have increased Iranian air traffic by 17 per cent, the official state news agency has reported.

The president has previously spoken by phone with the leaders of Qatar, Russia, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in a bid to ease the row.

He was hopeful that honest efforts by Pakistan and other Muslim countries would help in resolving the diplomatic crisis engulfing the Middle East in a peaceful manner and without causing much damage to their economies.
