Box and Microsoft announce new partnership centered around Azure

Box will use Azure, Microsft's cloud unit, as a strategic public cloud storage platform and both companies have pledged to share go-to-market investments, including efforts to co-sell Box with Azure.

Despite that rivalry, the companies have agreed to jointly sell Box services and elements of Microsoft's Azure cloud-computing platform, they said on Tuesday.

Microsoft has announced a new tie-up with Box that will extend the intelligence and reach of its Azure cloud platform. The Redmond, Washington-based tech giant also benefits from its inclusion in Box Zones, which Box rolled out a year ago in an effort to address local data storage requirements.

Box Zones to soon be available from Azure locations as part of the collaboration. However, Box co-founder Aaron Levie explained that this new alliance is meant to combine Box services with Microsoft's intelligent cloud. At the moment this offering from Box is located in eight countries but in the future Box plans to use Azure's global footprint to expand the offering.

Since our founding, Box's customers have relied on interoperability with Box and Microsoft solutions like Office, Windows, Outlook, and most recently the Office 365 suite with products like Office Online and Microsoft Teams.

Last but not least, Box will also integrate the Azure Cognitive Services to help provide, for example, media and entertainment professionals with a way of indexing their videos stored on the service, thus enabling more powerful video search capabilities.
