After "Morning Joe" played the clip of Scarborough's announcement, co-host and fiancée Mika Brzezinski said, "That's big". "I've got to become an independent".

Stephen Colbert asked why other Republicans haven't made the move to distance themselves from a president that Scarborough says has bigoted behavior. And it's actually disgusting.

In the interview, Scarborough expressed his disappointment with the Republican Party, insisting that it predated his feud with Trump. "They put it out there and then tell people it's much ado about nothing". I am a Republican, but I'm not gonna to be a Republican anymore.

Are you shocked that Scarborough is no longer a Republican?

A year ago, before they'd acknowledged their relationship publicly, Scarborough and Brzezinski were on the island together to attend the wedding of Colin Barnicle, the son of former Boston Globe columnist and "Morning Joe" contributor Mike Barnicle. "Crazy Mika, ' and claiming Brzezinski 'was bleeding badly from a face-lift" when he saw her last year at a New Years Eve party at Mar-A-Lago. The president's tweets came after the two co-hosts criticized him on air.

"Congratulations, 'Dumber than rocks, Mika", Scarborough said, deadpanned.

On "The Late Show", Mr Scarborough said the modern day Republican Party was "not a party that Ronald Reagan could associate with" and not one he wants to belong to either.

"I think it's inexplicable", he said.

Scarborough explained that the Republican Party had betrayed its core values. "Nothing", he said. "There's always silence". Despite the severe escalation, "Morning Joe" has benefited from the chaos and is enjoying a ratings surge that the show has never seen before.

When Colbert asked the former congressman what he made of the Republican Party's seemingly unwavering support for the current President, Scarborough did not mince words.

Trump beat Democrat Hillary Clinton last November in the most divisive presidential election in modern US politics, in which a gulf between Republicans and Democrats has widened and hardened over ideological positions on social and economic issues.

Brzezinski believes that Trump tweeted the controversial remarks after she poked fun at his fake Time magazine cover that reportedly hangs in one of his country clubs.
