Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, whose digital arm, Jio, had caused revolution in data connectivity when the company offered unlimited free data to its customers previous year, has now announced it will provide free smartphones to its customers.

Reliance Jio is expected to go for the disruptive pricing model, just like it did with the Jio network and now the JioPhone.

Jio users opting for the company's all-new VoLTE feature phone will need to make a one-time payment of Rs 1,500 (fully refundable), but stay signed on for 36 months to get a refund by returning the used 4G device. The deposit would be given back to a user after three years when the phone is returned.

While the Reliance Jio Phone was launched today, the highly anticipated JioFiber is on its way.

Pre-bookings for Jio Phone will start from August 24.

The JioPhone is coming bundled with the Jio number and membership which Reliance is going to charge for you.

JioPhone has been revealed by Reliance today, and with JioPhone, Reliance is providing some of the most awesome data and voice offers. "Along with this accessory, users can opt for the existing Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan Rs 309 pack that would allow users to watch nearly three-four hours of videos daily, of their choice, on a large screen".

China Urges India to Withdraw From Disputed Region, Stages Drills
It also said that China should take measures to protect the entire 3,500-kilometre border with India. India and China have ongoing border disputes.

"At a plan Rs 153 a month, it is only 3 per cent of the existing price putting an end to unaffordable data for all Indians forever", Ambani said.

"If these users were to consume a similar quantity of data on other operator's network, they would spend Rs 4,000 - 5,000 per month".

"The JioPhone will be available to all Indians for an effective price of Rs zero", Ambani told the company's 40th Annual General Meeting here. "Digital Life will no longer be the privilege of the affluent few", Ambani added. "We believe that the feature phone will be a compelling attraction for those customers for whom device prices were a hurdle for shifting from a 2G to a 4G service", said Rajan S Mathews, Director General, Cellular Operators' Association of India.

Samsung leads the market with 28 percent while almost 14 percent of phones sold in India are made by Xiaomi, according to a study by the International Data Corporation, an IT research firm. "All Jio Phone users can enjoy viewing their Jio content on their phones from their TV screens", Ambani said. It supports 22 Indian languages and also supports voice commands to call anyone in your contacts.

On top of the "free" handset, the voice calls on JioPhone will also come without a cost. "Today, every young India should have information access at his fingertips and this is what JioPhone will enable", said Ambani.

In the 40 edition of the AGM, Ambani pointed out that device affordability is one the most critical problem in the telecom sector and is creating a digital divide among users. While we expected more on the subject, like a tentative roll out date, Ambani said the company is "well on track" to bring its high-speed 100Mbps broadband to all.
