The Emerald Princess had left Seattle on Sunday for a seven-day, round trip cruise.

Passengers aboard a USA cruise ship have been forced to abandon their holiday after a suspicious death in one of the cabins.

She says the agency is required to step in when such deaths occur in worldwide or US waters.

Feger-Pellessier said Wednesday morning the Federal Bureau of Investigation evidence response team was on its way down to Juneau and that processing the scene would likely take "a long time". The 3,092-passenger cruise ship had held an official inaugural call ceremony at the municipality on June 1. At press time, authorities had planned to embark the Emerald Princess when it reached in Juneau. Other passengers were able to move about the ship, but not disembark.

Suzanne Ragsdale, of Houston, said passengers were notified late Tuesday about security issues and told over the public address system Wednesday morning that there had been a death. The cruise line confirmed the incident occurred around 9 p.m. local time Tuesday. Most were wearing white and gray hooded sweat shirts.

Witnesses say that the incident was described by crew members as "a domestic disturbance".

"When I get to Floor 9, I see this little girl sitting on, I assume, her grandma or somebody sitting on her lap wrapped up in a blanket and she's just sobbing", he said. The agency has jurisdiction in this case, it said, because the incident happened on the water.

"The groups were taken to vehicles with dark-tinted windows waiting in a restricted area of the port, and the people were whisked away".

The FBI and Coast Guard are investigating the death.

No further schedule changes were expected for the cruise, which was set to leave late Wednesday and head to the southeast Alaska town of Skagway, Kamali said.

The Emerald Princess, on a one-week cruise out of Seattle since July 23, had been scheduled to make a scenic cruise of Tracy Arm Fjord on Wednesday.

A Princess Cruises spokeswoman would not confirm if passengers would be offered compensation but said "conversations" were taking place.
