Priebus takes his turn on the Trump administration hot seat

President Donald Trump named Kelly as his new Chief of Staff on July 28, ousting Reince Priebus.

But he has privately floated potential replacements for Priebus, including Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, deputy national security adviser Dina Powell, chief economic adviser Gary Cohn and former campaign adviser David Urban, according to three people who've been in conversation with the president and senior staffers recently. "Change is good. He wanted to go in a different direction".

Kelly, a former U.S. Marine Corps general, was called a "Great American and a Great Leader" by Trump.

"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff".

Priebus, who was brought on by the outsider President in large part because of his Washington relationships, also wound up carrying a hefty share of the blame for the White House's legislative stumbles.

It also comes a week after Trump hired Wall Street businessman Anthony Scaramucci, a move that sparked a long-rumored shake-up among the president's top aides.

"I didn't notice tension in the room, but honestly I likely wouldn't have if it was there-with such a short amount of time for a high-profile assignment my attention was all going to the viewfinder", he said.

Before accepting the position, Scaramucci served as the vice president and chief strategy officer at the Export-Import Bank, a position he held since June 19.

All but seven chiefs of staff have lasted at least one year in the job.

He's settled in real good, he's not only a great player but as a person which makes it easier for him and for us. "We were good today".

A Marine, Kelly served in the military for almost five decades and served in positions including chief of Southern Command, senior assistant to the secretary of defense and legislative liaison to Congress, and he served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Daily Caller first reported Friday that Scaramucci wouldn't be taking a salary. "He has been a true star of my Administration", Trump said.

The recent revelation that Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, met with a Russian government lawyer has magnified those questions and fueled Trump's frustration over leaks to the media.

As the tweet began to reverberate around Washington, Priebus exited Air Force One into the pouring rain and loaded into a black suburban with senior White House aides Steven Miller and Dan Scavino.

He will start work on Monday, a White House spokesperson says. "I can't think of a better person than General John Kelly to succeed me and I wish him God's blessings and great success", he said.

President Donald Trump tweeted late Friday afternoon that he had replaced Priebus - who is from Kenosha and helped orchestrate both Walker's first victory as governor in 2010 and Trump's win last fall.

Priebus and other officials thought Scaramucci was unqualified for the job, and had blocked him from previous efforts to join the White House.

A source close to Priebus said the former Republican National Committee chairman turned in his resignation on Thursday night, after Scaramucci's rant against him was published by the New Yorker magazine.

Pence also congratulated Kelly, writing, "I know you will do a great job!" "He has served the president and the American people capably and passionately", said Ryan.
