Moscow courthouse shooting leaves at least 3 dead, reports say

Three defendants have been shot dead after reportedly trying to grab guns from guards during a trial at Moscow Regional Court.

Earlier it was reported that the security forces had killed the members of the GTA gang who attacked the sentries in the building of the Moscow Regional Court.

Two other people, including a 45-year-old man and 40-year-old woman, inside the courthouse were hospitalized, the Moscow region health ministry said.

Interfax reports about five people shot by the gang, RIA Novosti referring to the defendant's lawyer wrote about four.

A firefight ensued in which three of the suspects were killed and two were seriously wounded. "Meanwhile, the second guard managed to call for backup", Petrenko told the news agency.

They were dubbed the "Grand Theft Auto" gang by Russian media over apparent similarities with the ultra-violent video game.

Prosecutors said the gang members were placing spikes on roads, forcing the motorists out of their vehicles and shooting them dead.

"I was attending a court hearing of an unrelated case", lawyer Sofia Rubasskaya told Rossia 24. Three policemen and two of the defendants were injured in an ensuing shootout.

The nine men, all from central Asia, are charged with 17 murders and two attempted murders.
