In a statement Heather Nauert, a spokesman for the office, said Manila was one of three stops Tillerson would be making during his travel to the region.

President Barack Obama expanded the unit's mission at the end of his term after intelligence agencies concluded Russian Federation had flooded social media with fake news and phony Twitter accounts to influence the 2016 elections, and lawmakers from both parties want a stronger USA response.

Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov said it is important that the U.S. president is thinking about the current situation and prospects for bilateral relations, but his intention to sign the sanctions bill into law contradicts the building of ties.

United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is scheduled to visit Manila this week to participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional Forum, the East Asia Summit Ministerial, and the US-ASEAN Ministerial.
