President Trump has made a decision to stand up and defend his national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, amid increasing pressure to get him fired from some members of the commander in chief's electoral base.

Retired Army Colonel Pete Mansoor, who worked closely with McMaster, told Politico that "there is a split in the White House between the Bannon camp of ideologues and the McMaster-Mattis-Tillerson camp of more centrist intellectuals". Breitbart attacks quoting "administration officials" alleged McMaster opposed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appearing alongside Trump at the president's recent visit to the Western Wall. But given the rampant speculation about even McMaster's own status - President Donald Trump is said to be considering sending him to Afghanistan to command US-led forces there - few were mollified. Trump wants to get us out of Afghanistan - McMaster wants to go in.

However, for those who have consecrated themselves to the priestly rites of Donald Trump's cult of personality, McMaster's staffing changes constitute nothing short of blasphemy. Both men, for instance, agreed that the Trump administration should certify that Tehran is complying with the Iran nuclear deal - a pivotal decision that Trump resisted last month despite concerns that not issuing the certification would infuriate United States allies and forfeit all current restrictions on Iran's nuclear program.

McMaster moved to replace the Jewish official when the concerns were raised in March, but Cohen-Watnick appealed to Trump's top advisers, Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner, who got Trump to intervene to save his job. Sources say the Trump staffers fired by McMaster had repeatedly crossed their boss on issues such as U.S involvement in Syria and Afghanistan, President Obama's Iran deal, the Paris Climate Accord and the threat of radical Islam.

In recent weeks there have been a series of high profile resignations and firings in the White House, with press secretary Sean Spicer purportedly resigning in protest at the appointment of Anthony Scaramucci as communications director. The White House did not respond to request for comment, but s enior West Wing officials told Circa that Trump did not know about the letter.
