Police in the United States have arrested a Northwestern University professor from IL and an employee of Britain's Oxford University, who were both sought in connection with a fatal stabbing in Chicago last week.

Lathem gave himself up late Friday at the Oakland federal building and Warren surrendered at about the same time to the San Francisco Police Department, according to Michael McCloud, fugitive taskforce commander with the U.S. Marshals Service. Warren has been suspended from his post as the senior treasury assistant at Somerville College, Britain's Oxford Mail reports.

"Both individuals will be held accountable for their actions and we hope today's arrest brings some comfort for the victim's family", Chicago police said in a statement.

His death occurred the same day that one of the suspects walked into the public library of Lake Geneva, a Wisconsin resort city about an hour's drive from Chicago, and made a $1,000 cash donation in Cornell-Duranleau's name. They wouldn't say if they believe Warren and Lathem knew each other before Warren traveled to Chicago from England.

Warren and Lathem are accused of repeatedly stabbing the victim in the apartment before fleeing.

Prof Lathem is a medical researcher and associate professor at Northwestern University's downtown Chicago campus.

"Whatever the circumstances, we would urge him to contact the U.S. authorities as soon as possible, in the best interests of everyone concerned".

"We are also thankful both men are safely in custody and this did not end in further tragedy".

He sent family and friends a video in which he apologised, police said.

Authorities haven't detailed the relationship between 42-year-old Lathem and Cornell-Duranleau, who moved to Chicago from the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area after receiving his cosmetology license.

Mr Warren, a Somerville College employee who is in charge of payroll and pensions, was reported missing by his family to Thames Valley Police on July 25 from his home in Longcot. Arrest warrants allege that Lathem and Warren stabbed Cornell-Duranleau multiple times.

"This is now a criminal matter under investigation by the appropriate authorities, and Northwestern University is cooperating in that investigation", its statement said.
