The Missouri State Highway Patrol, Henry County Sheriff's Office and the Clinton Police Department have checkpoints set up across Clinton.

A manhunt was underway in Missouri Monday for a person of interest in the fatal shooting of a police officer.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Officer Gary Michael died after being shot during a traffic stop in the town of Clinton. He approached McCarthy on Sunday night at 10.45pm at an intersection on Missouri 13 in Clinton, Missouri, for a registration violation.

Mr Michael was reportedly able to return fire, but it is not known whether the driver was injured.

Court records indicate McCarthy pleaded guilty in November 2013 in Missouri to a misdemeanor driving without a valid license.

Michael, 37, had been on the force less than a year, Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe said.

In addition to the disorderly conduct conviction, McCarthy had an extensive criminal background in New Hampshire.

They are advising the public to avoid contact with McCarthy as he is considered armed and unsafe.

Officials believe he may still be traveling on foot and say it is likely he is still in the Clinton area.

Michael married his wife Cresinda in 2015, becoming a stepfather to her two sons. He was a Clinton resident and had been with the department for less than a year. "He was doing his job, you know, he was there protecting and serving and that's what we're called to do, and he did it with heroic fashion".
