Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami's faction of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) passed a resolution on Thursday denouncing current party General Secretary TTV Dinakaran.

Dismissing the meet chaired by Palaniswami as caused by fear and selfish motives, he said the AIADMK was in the control of the party chief and himself.

While this is a significant step in healing the rift with the breakaway faction led by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam (OPS), senior leaders in the breakaway faction described the resolution as a half measure. The merger talks were fast-tracked as Dinakaran tried to assert his position with a series of appointments.

The two leaders will be in the national capital on Thursday to attend M Venkaiah Naidu's swearing-in ceremony as the Vice President.

Asked why the Chief Minister's camp, which remained together with Mr. Dhinakaran till mid-April, had chosen to part ways with him now, he said it had become a precondition for the merger of the two factions.

PTI reports that Dhinakaran today warned of "surgical action" against EPS, and rubbished the party statements questioning his appointment as AIADMK deputy general secretary.

In February, Palaniswamy won a confidence vote in the Assembly with the support of 122 MLAs. The resolution also noted that Sasikala's appointment as General Secretary after the death of J Jayalalithaa has also been challenged before the Election Commission. Following Jayalalithaa's death in December 2016, the AIADMK split into different factions. A merger with two various factions of AIADMK, if finally approved, will further sideline the ruling party's jailed general secretary VK Sasikala and her "Mannargudi Mafia". It is understood that the BJP was nudging both the factions to unite and even consider the prospects of joining the NDA formally. He had appointed new office bearers last week, claiming to be the deputy general secretary acting on the orders of Sasikala, who he says is the general secretary of the AIADMK. Dhinakaran countered the resolution saying the party bylaws stipulate completion of five years as primary member of the party only for those who contest for posts.

He wondered how the EPS camp could comment against Sasikala when they themselves had furnished an affidavit to the EC, endorsing her appointment as party chief. The EPS faction felt the appointments were to confuse the ranks.
