Distracted Driving Around Schools and Buses is Recipe for Disaster

Unfortunately every year in the United States, children are injured and killed walking to and from school and while loading and/or unloading from a school bus. They are required to remain stopped until the sign comes down.

While bus drivers and students are well-versed in bus safety, officials hope others on the roads will be just as cautious.

"Our focus is to get our children to school safely in the morning, and get them home safely at night", said driver Lynn Robinett.

School bus drivers in Martinsville expressed concern to the district superintendent Thursday stating they felt their new bus routes were unsafe for students.

Barr-Reeve's School Resource Officer Mark Bledsoe said drivers around the schools should take note of the new 35 miles per hour school zone signage on CR 100N. School bus drivers carry a load of responsibility every day and in order to be able to do it, they have to be qualified. Each year the Indiana Department of Education gathers information from school corporations for stop-arm violations on a set day.

Twenty-two percent called the shortage "severe", and 5 percent said they are "desperate" to find drivers, according to a School Bus Fleet magazine survey of the nation's 50 largest school bus operators, the York (Pa.) Daily Record reported. Trooper Todd Ringle is posted outside Castle High School in Warrick County on their first day of class.

Levallois-Perret is about 3 miles from city center landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Elysee Presidential Palace. The driver was killed but the country's interior minister described the attack on the police as terror-related.

"It is evident that motorists are not aware all the lanes must stop for a school bus stop arm if there isn't a physical barrier for a median", said Puckett.

If there is no unimproved median or barrier, then all lanes in all directions must stop.

"School bus drivers don't like getting caught behind a school bus", Beechboard said.

Students are urged to walk on the sidewalk to the bus stop, or if there is no sidewalk, to walk on the left facing traffic. After the bus comes to a stop, red flashing lights are activated, a stop arm extends and motorists need to stop a safe distance from the bus.

Students are instructed to wait until their bus driver signals for them to cross the road as a precaution against oncoming traffic.

Tillman cautioned drivers to be especially observant in school zones before school starts and when they are letting out and to be on the lookout for buses, cars and pedestrians.
