A sole winning ticket worth an estimated $393 million ($247 million cash value) for the Friday, August 11, 2017, Mega Millions jackpot was sold at Nick's Barbecue in Palos Heights, Illinois.

Three people matched five numbers to win $1 million, but those tickets were sold in Washington, California and Ohio. The Washington ticket is worth $5 million because the victor chose to spend an extra dollar for the optional Megaplier, which was 5x, lottery offiicials said.

It's the largest jackpot Mega Millions has had in nearly a year, as well as the fifth-largest prize in the game's 15-year history. It's the first jackpot victor in Mega Millions since April 28.

"They're asking how high the jackpot is and I tell them and they say 'well I might as well buy a ticket" Canastraro said. One August jackpot victor never claimed his/her prize - $31 million won in NY on August 1, 2006. In that drawing, David Trapp won $61 million in California. Saturday night's Powerball drawing is expected cross $356 million.

"You see more individuals in line purchasing the two tickets when the two recreations are over $300 million", said Jeff Lenard, representative for the National Association of Convenience Stores, whose individuals offer around 66% of the country's lottery tickets.

The odds of winning a jackpot were abysmal - one in 258.9 million for Mega Millions, and one in 292.2 million for Powerball.
