Today, shortly before unveiling its new Galaxy Note8 flagship phone, Samsung mobile chief DJ Koh confirmed the rumor to be accurate. That timeline isn't specific, but at least it's something. As I mentioned, I wanted to provide a fruitful user experience at home with Samsung devices, and I want to be moving quite heavily on it. From this perspective also, Samsung needs to quickly scale up the capabilities of Bixby.

The WSJ reported in July that Samsung was developing a voice-activated speaker powered by its digital assistant Bixby. Users can ask Bixby to carry out tasks such as searching through a photo album, or send a picture that has just been taken to a contact.

"In the future, Bixby will have the learning power to offer more intelligent and personalized interactions and seamless connections across more devices", he added.

The regulatory commitments were included in an agreement that was signed by five significant parties that supported the proposal. That turned out to be Sempra, which is based in San Diego and provides power to 32 million customers.

Samsung also reportedly expressed concerns over its ability to make a dent in the home speaker market, thanks to this late start and strong products from other competitors. After confirming a new Gear S smartwatch will be unveiled on August 30, the South Korean company now claims a smart speaker is in the works as well.

Samsung's Galaxy S8 (review) was one of the better releases this year, but its Bixby assistant was left in a very unfinished state, despite the inclusion of a dedicated button for the service. Upcoming products include models from Microsoft and Harman Kardon that feature its Cortana virtual assistant and the Siri-powered Apple HomePod.
