Offbeat comedians Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding have replaced Giedroyc and Perkins as hosts, while the chef and writer Prue Leith has taken over for Berry as judge.

With seven day viewing figures, that number rose to 13.58, so we can also expect the number of Channel 4 viewers to increase significantly with on demand streaming. And this includes the 700,000 people who tuned in via Channel 4 +1.

One reason for the drop is the commercial broadcaster's reach, far fewer television sets having access to Channel 4 compared to BBC One.

Audiences of 6.5million tuned in to get their baking fix, with Channel 4 bosses said to be "delighted" it was such a hit despite its controversial re-boot.

The cast has changed, but the new Great British Bake Off doesn't mess with the formula.

Advertising space is understood to have sold for between £150,000-£200,000 for a 30 second slot before, during and after the show - around £50,000 more than Channel 4 normally charges at that time.

They racked up their fourth successive win, 3-0 against third-placed Saint-Etienne. Marseille's first defeat of the season leaves it in sixth place with seven points.

Despite not being averse to its own bit of competitive scheduling, the BBC labelled the decision a "cynical move" and moved The Big Family Cooking Showdown to Thursdays "in the best interest of viewers".

She added: 'I am delighted millions watched the new team put 12 magnificent bakers through their paces.

Plus, as always, the audience at home and in the studio will be able to show off their bakes, from the delightful, the delicious to the downright disastrous.

Some have even suggested that Berry will be silently judging them for watching the new series.

What did you think of the return of the Great British Bake Off and its new presenters? It peaked with 7.7 million viewers and a 34.6% share, delivering C4's biggest overnight performance since the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in August 2012.
