In July, the first positive test of West Nile Virus was reported in Oakland County.

Health department officials said in a statement that the woman was hospitalized after becoming ill mid-August. In 2016, 13 cases of West Nile virus were reported in Wisconsin.

"People may feel, with the end of summer approaching, that the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes is reduced", said Dr. Charles Gardener, Medical Officer of Health for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

Try to stay indoors when mosquitoes are most active (dusk to dawn). "We urge everyone to take simple steps to eliminate mosquito breeding sources around their homes", including keeping your home free of standing water. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says West Nile virus was confirmed in eight horses, including at least one in Ottawa County. This season, 1,763 mosquito traps have been set, and 40,801 mosquitoes were submitted to the Nevada Department of Agriculture Animal Disease Laboratory for analysis.

Because the species of mosquito found carrying the virus doesn't normally bite humans, the risk of the public becoming infected is low, Leominster Health Director Christopher Knuth said.

The San Bernardino County death was the third in California this season. To date, none have tested positive for Zika. The illness is not spread person to person.

"For the vast majority of people, even those that are exposed to the West Nile Virus, they won't have any symptoms what so ever", said Hausbeck. One in five people will develop illness with fever and other symptoms, including headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea and rash. Severe symptoms of West Nile virus are associated with encephalitis or meningitis, and may include stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, muscle weakness, convulsions and paralysis.

Now is the time to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites as this is the most critical time of the year when virus activity reaches its peak in the mosquito population.
