Black is back: Hokies, WVU renew Black Diamond Trophy rivalry

Virginia Tech lost most of their offensive weapons from last season including Jerod Evans, Isaiah Ford, and Bucky Hodges so the Hokies will be looking to find a new rhythm offensively.

Making the first start of his career, Virginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson exhibited poise belying his youth in directing the 21st-ranked Hokies to a 31-24 win against No. 22 West Virginia on Sunday night at packed FedEx Field. But a holding penalty followed by an unsportsmanlike flag on Mountaineer head coach Dana Holgorsen ended the drive and knocked WVU out of field goal range. "We had a chance to win all the way until the end".

Rish Equipment Company, a producer of machinery for coal, construction and other industries, came to an agreement with the athletic directors of WVU and VA Tech in 1997 to establish a scholarship fund for the student athletes.

The WVU Moutaineers and Virginia Tech Hokies will soon face off in a battle for the coveted Black Diamond Trophy this coming Sunday, a trophy that originated in Bluefield, West Virginia. His weapons on the outside will include senior Ka'Raun White with juniors Gary Jennings and return of David Sills V. West Virginia returns the Big 12 conference's top run game led by star senior running back Justin Crawford and sophomore Kennedy McKoy.

Jennings caught a career-high 13 passes for 189 yards, also a career-best.

Jackson completed 15 of 26 passes for yards and a touchdown while adding 101 yards and a score on the ground.

- I spoke today with WVU quarterback Will Grier's father Chad, who was checking out the Lincoln Memorial: "I don't expect Will to make every throw or make every play, but I think the thing we'll get tonight is he's going to compete".

This time, Virginia Tech responded before its offense could even take the field.

With Andrew Luck looking doubtful, Colts acquire Jacoby Brissett from Patriots
Brissett completed 28 of his 39 pass attempts in the 40-38 defeat, throwing for 341 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. His rookie contract is up after this season, but all signs to the Patriots believing in him as the successor to Brady.

Jackson's terrific second half continued midway through the second on a 47-yard scamper to set up a short touchdown run with 6:30 to go. The 11-yard score put the Mountaineers ahead 7-3 with 5:37 left in the second quarter.

What they saw in the first 30 minutes of action was a pair of teams that played solid defense, but struggled to move the ball offensively. "Everything that we thought he was he is".

The two teams would then exchange punts, giving the West Virginia offense the ball on their own 20-yard line to start their fourth drive. He'll grind it out and find a way to take the game into the fourth quarter.

Not progressing far down field gave the Hokies good field position, which they used early on to score. From there, Virginia Tech would punch the ball into the end zone to recapture the lead again this time at 31-24.

After West Virginia tied up with Virginia Tech, the Hokies immediately made a come-back with a touchdown by Cam Phillips.

At the end of the day, though, it was Bud Foster's famous defense that sealed the victory for the Hokies. Most importantly, Jackson did not turn the ball over and was almost flawless after missing an easy touchdown throw to Cam Phillips midway through the first. David Sills added nine receptions for 94 yards and had two receiving touchdowns, and National Football League receiver Kevin White's younger brother, senior Ka'Raun White, had four receptions for 74 yards for WVU.

The offseason allowed Crawford to get a better understanding of the game by watching countless videos of opposing defenses.
