North Korea nuclear test: Governments react with trepidation and concern

The ministry did not say how many diplomats wanted to leave. The North followed its two tests of Hwasong-14 ICBMs by threatening in August to launch a salvo of its Hwasong-12 intermediate range missiles toward the U.S. Pacific island territory of Guam.

Both leaders spoke on the phone on Friday about North Korea's "continued destabilising and escalatory behaviour" and agreed to strengthen their alliance through defence cooperation and South Korea's defence capabilities, the White House said in a statement.

The Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, the 11-day joint military exercises the United States and South Korea completed Thursday, involved tens of thousands of US and South Korean troops, though the exercises were conducted largely through computer simulations.

Earlier this year, US citizen Otto Warmbier was sent home in a coma and later died after spending more than a year in North Korean detention.

She said it is absolutely vital there be continued pressure from the worldwide community to support peace and de-escalation of conflict on the Korean peninsula.

Trump also gave "conceptual" approval to the purchase by the South of billions of dollars of U.S. military hardware, the White House said. The U.S. and South Korean aircraft then flew across the Korean Peninsula and practiced attack capabilities by releasing live weapons at the Pilsung Range training area before returning to their respective home stations.

North Korea further raised regional tensions on Tuesday by launching an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan, drawing global condemnation.

"North Korea's actions are a threat to our allies, partners and homeland, and their destabilizing actions will be met accordingly", said Air Force Gen. Terrence J.

May arrived in Japan on Wednesday on a three-day official visit to the country, marked by the escalated North Korean threat.

Earlier this month, the Security Council with 15 members unanimously approved new set of sanctions against North Korea in response to the two long-distance ballistic missiles tests in July.
