3 defensive keys for Cardinals in Week 1 vs. Lions

After quarterback Stafford threw his first touchdown pass of the year to Arizona Cardinals cornerback Justin Bethel, special-teams mistakes and back-breaking penalties killed Detroit's offensive momentum and put the defense in bad positions. His favorite target? Rookie wide receiver Kenny Golladay, who caught four of Stafford's passes for 69 yards and two second-half scores.

In the third quarter, the Cardinals offense-which had mustered just one field goal through 30 minutes of football-finally warmed up, with quarterback Carson Palmer stringing together two long drives, even as star tailback David Johnson watched from the sidelines with an injury.

With a solid victory under their belts, the Detroit Lions will next head to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey to face the New York Giants on September 18th for a primetime game on Monday Night Football.

The Lions have players who will get yards after contact.

Golladay was one of the heroes in the Lions' 35-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals in their season opener.

The Lions offense responded by stalling out again as the game looked to be slipping away, before the defense delivered yet another game-altering turnover.

The Cardinals led the league in sacks as a team with 48 last season. Three Lions converged on him for the tackle and brought him down quickly.

Two plays later, Stafford connected with Theo Riddick from seven yards out for a touchdown, but a failed two-point conversion left the Lions down two. Stafford has the weapons he needs to get back to the playoffs, but question marks are all over this defense. The rookie did the rest, making an impressive diving grab to put the Lions up 11.

Stafford finished the day completing 29 of his 41 passes for 291 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. When he high-points a ball like that, there's nothing a defensive back can do.
