Florida deputy, corrections officer die after colliding head-on, FHP says

A Hardee County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said Julie Bridges was a 13-year veteran of the sheriff's office, NBC-2.com reported. She was planning on returning to work another shift this morning when she was killed.

The Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the crash.

Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Julie Jones identified the prison officer as Sgt. Joseph Ossman, a 21-year veteran of the department. There were no other passengers in either vehicle.

"Our law enforcement and correctional officers work every day to keep Floridians safe", Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement. Other details had not yet been released.

Hardee Correctional Institution - near Wauchula, east of Bradenton - was not among the prisons the state evacuated in advance of Hurricane Irma, FDOC said.

"I am heartbroken to learn of the loss of these the two individuals in a traffic accident today".

A total of at least 25 people have died as a result of the hurricane.
