In a reference to repeated claims by Sessions, the justice department press release said the Federal Bureau of Investigation data "reaffirms that the worrying violent crime increase that began in 2015 after many years of decline was not an isolated incident".

"For the sake of all Americans, we must confront and turn back the rising tide of violent crime", said the top United States prosecutor.

"Prosecutors should charge and pursue the most serious, readily provable offense. those that carry the most substantial guidelines sentence, including mandatory minimum sentences", Sessions said at the time. That included an estimated 17,250 murders - an 8.6 percent increase from 2015. The murder rate also rose, from 4.9 to 5.3 per 100,000 residents.

Experts have attributed the country's 4.1 percent increase in violent crime and 8.6 increase in murders to a few large cities such as Chicago, Baltimore and Las Vegas, which have seen significant spikes. "At the same time, other cities like NY are keeping crime down".

The report showed there were an estimated 1.2 million violent crimes in the USA past year.

President Trump pledged to run the "law-and-order administration", while Mr. Sessions has put gangs and drug traffickers in the Justice Department's cross hairs, and routinely blamed sanctuary cities that shield illegal immigrants from deportation for cultivating a culture of lawlessness.

The mayor said the Albuquerque Police Department was working closely with new District Attorney Raúl Torrez to identify repeat offenders and work on determining which ones pose the bigger danger to the community and which ones would benefit from treatment programs.

Some criminologists have contested that conclusion, saying that rates for overall crime and violent crime are still much lower today than they were several decades ago.

"Chicago, for example, has had serious issues that need to be addressed", Chettiar said.
