However, it is not clear how much data was accessed, exactly when the hack took place and if the hackers have been able to breach cell phones used by other White House staffers.

The outlet first reported Thursday that Kelly brought his phone to White House tech support this summer after it stopped working properly.

In response to the incident with Kelly's phone, the White House has installed additional storage lockers for personal devices in the West Wing.

According to the September memo, White House staffer analyzed the phone over several days to determine why it was inoperable - and numerous phone's functions were not working.

Investigators also searched the offices of Brazil's Olympic Committee and several companies suspected of links to the scandal. A source is in possession of emails that could corroborate the accusations, according to Brazilian justice officials.

White House officials maintain that Gen. Kelly used his government issued phone for official communications and has not used the hacked phone since it stopped working. He reportedly told IT the phone had been having issues for months.

Politico reported Thursday that "three US government officials" believed Kelly's phone was breached, possibly by hackers or foreign governments - and giving them access to critical data. The e-mails in question, according to Politico, include "nonpublic travel documents, internal schedules and some official White House materials", many of them sent by Ivanka herself.

Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general, has sought to impose order on the day-to-day operations at the White House. The IT department determined that the phone may have been compromised beginning in December 2016. Investigators say that numerous phone's features weren't functioning.

Despite several days of "testing" by tech staff, it's unclear how the phone was initially breached and, most importantly, whether any sensitive government information was accessed. One could assume he was using it for government business at some point.
