LSU hangs out to defeat Florida 17-16

LSU's Golden Band from Tiger Land on Sunday issued a statement to explain a tense moment that occurred between the third and fourth quarters of Saturday's game.

Devin White, who finished with 13 tackles, broke up a Feleipe Franks fourth down pass with 1:39 to play to seal the deal, after a punt from Zach Von Rosenberg pinned the Gators deep in their own territory with little time to mount a game-winning drive. That's not entirely his fault, but Franks missed an opportunity.

It's year three of the Jim McElwain era, and Florida still is struggling to find ways to make plays, specifically at the QB position.

Did LSU get what it deserved? Josh Hammond and Brandon Powell were the leading pass-catchers with 29 yards each yards.

It'd be a surprise if it didn't catch on quickly for the rest of the season - and beyond. Tell me again why McElwain talked him up so much over the past 16 months?

But the backfield, led by Malik Davis and his 90 yards, was impressive once again.

The Gators answered, getting the first of consecutive touchdown runs by Lamical Perine. Wide receiver Kadarius Toney managed 52 yards on six carries out of the wildcat. Etling came into the game completing 20 percent of his passes under pressure.

The last time LSU went on the road and held an SEC opponent without a first-half touchdown was September 12, 2015 at Mississippi State. UF now has gone three games without a turnover. Austin Allen returned an interception 34 yards for a TD, Keisean Nixon had a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown and Cole Kelley for 45 and TJ Brunson ran 74 yards after recovering a fumble for another score. Florida's defense has taken a big step back from last season, and the turnovers must come to negate the drop-off. Etling slightly underthrew Chark, but LSU's No. 7 out muscled Florida's, Duke Dawson, to snag the reception. Reese and defensive end Jabari Zuniga sacked LSU quarterback Danny Etling once each. McElwain will have to do his finest job to keep this season from unravelling as attrition has simply leveled his roster. Both missed last week's game with injuries.

Game went down to the wire and Tigers pulled it out with a 17-16 fight to the end.
