One person has died from a wildfire in Northern California, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal-Fire) said on Monday.

Cal Fire listed updated acreages for a few of the many blazes, including Tubbs Fire in Napa County, 20,000 acres; Altas Fire in Napa County, 5,000 acres; and the Redwood Fire in Mendocino County, 4,500 acres.

"These fires have destroyed structures and continue to threaten thousands of homes, necessitating the evacuation of thousands of residents", said the governor. A Hilton Hotel was smoldering and in ruins. Several smaller fires are also burning in the region.

Over $2 billion has been spent by the Forest Service to suppress fires during the 2017 wildfire season, making it the most expensive season ever.

Other fires have also prompted evacuations in Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Glen Ellen and other areas.

Smoke was thick in San Francisco, 60 miles (96 km) south of the Sonoma County fire.

The Atlas Peak fire as of about 9:30 a.m. was running toward the Napa-Solano County line, Napa County Fire Chief Barry Biermann said. Three evacuation centers have been set up.

A wind-whipped wildfire roared to life Sunday night, quickly growing to more than 200 acres on Atlas Peak near the Silverado County Club in Napa County, triggering dozens of evacuations.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said fires had broken out at Mark West Springs and Riebli roads in Santa Rosa, at Shiloh and Conde roads in Windsor and at Highway 116 and Fredericks Road in Sebastopol. We have very low humidity.

"We were sleeping, but we kept smelling smoke", Chris Thomas, 42, told SF Gate. "Certainly with day just breaking now, we are starting to see the structures that are affected", she said shortly after sunrise.

Business owner Andy Lahiji stood before a burned out storage warehouse where he said he had lost his inventory of furniture and other property.

Officials said Sonoma County emergency dispatchers were being "overwhelmed by 911 calls" from residents smelling smoke, adding, "Please only call 911 if you see actual unattended flames". As of Monday morning, firefighters had made no headway containing it.

This is a story in progress, with more information to come. "I really, I feel very sad". "I knew I needed to get her somewhere safe with some family and friends". "Hopefully insurance takes care of it".

Forecasters said winds will remain strong on Monday morning but are expected to ease by midday. An evacuation shelter is open at the First Baptist Church on Ridge Road in Grass Valley and a veterinary disaster team is stationed at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.
