The worldwide break had robbed him of an immediate opportunity to reply to Pep Guardiola's description of Tottenham as "the Harry Kane team" but this could wait two more weeks for Friday's press conference to preview the game against Bournemouth.

City are now top of the Premier League on goal difference and welcome Stoke to the Etihad this weekend.

The media all had a good chuckle about that in the papers.

"The players laughing. Of course, only for some supporters and people that of course care about the club, the team, you know".

"It was amusing when I heard him the other day because I know Pep very well".

Pochettino said that Guardiola was "excited" after his side's victory over Chelsea, and joked that he struggled to "keep his position and be a gentleman".

"When he was at Barca I never said "the Messi team"."
"He was part of the big success at Barcelona with Messi at his best and I never said it was "the Lionel Messi team".

"That is my opinion like I respect his opinion, but I don't think it will make the players more motivated or less motivated".

"But I think Mauricio has made a mistake".

"It wasn't disrespectful to myself".

The 21-year-old, who has featured seven times for the North Londoners so far this term, with two of those in the starting line-up, has somewhat flown under the radar of most following the successes of fellow team-mates Harry Kane and Dele Alli in recent terms. I figured he had a brain fart, and wasn't expressly trying to be disrespectful to Spurs or to the rest of the Harry Kane Team.

"When they lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final last season, I said it was incredible, because Chelsea had four shots on target and scored four goals". It could very well be that Pep was giving a backhanded compliment to Spurs with those comments.

"I think Mauricio, for the times we've met each other and the times I spoke with him... maybe my English is not quite well".

"I don't know why he showed so much respect to Manchester United", he continued.

"Maybe I should say "Pochettino team" instead of "Harry Kane's team". But I think the players move on". "There is a lot of credit in the way they play, in the way they want to show their football in the Premier League, the way they are always attacking".

Tottenham travel to the Etihad on December 16.
