Owing to the partnership with BSNL, the phone will let its buyers make "unlimited" voice calls as well use "unlimited" high-speed data at a nominal fee of Rs. 97 per month. The phone is aimed to target the 500 million feature phone users market in India and will be available for purchase starting 20 October.

The new feature phone also comes bundled with a BSNL SIM card, but like the JioPhone (which is now restricted to the Jio network only), Bharat 1 is not restricted to BSNL's network only, it can be used on any other network operator also including Airtel and Reliance Jio if they want to use 4G VoLTE services.

Earlier, Jio had launched its affordable feature phone in India at Rs 1,500 will be refunded after 3 years and last week Karbonn, partnering with Airtel launched its 4G smartphone A40 Indian at Rs 1,399. The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 processor and comes with 512 MB RAM alongside 4 GB internal storage. On the photography front, it features a 2-megapixel rear facing camera and a VGA selfie snapper. The Bharat 1 phone has dual SIM slots and is fueled by a 2,000mAh battery. The feature supports 22 Indian languages and comes loaded with a suite of entertainment apps ranging from Live TV to music, movies, and videos. Connectivity includes 4G VoLTE and Dual Sim support.

Nevertheless, Micromax and BSNL's Bharat 1 is expected to face tough competition from Reliance Jio and Airtel. So, it is no surprise that the Bharat-1 costs only Rs 2,200.

"With the Rs 97 plan offered by BSNL with the Bharat 1, I believe the network provider will be able to make its mark with this offering in the competitive telecom industry", said Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha at the event.

"Both Micromax and BSNL have been working with the aim of bringing the next wave of unconnected users on the Internet".
