Colorado police are searching for an armed and unsafe man who is a suspect in the shooting of three at a Walmart store in a Denver suburb Wednesday night.

About an hour later they said it was "NOT an active shooter" situation.

The shooting occurred shortly after 18:00 local time on Wednesday (midnight GMT) in a suburban Walmart supermarket in Thornton, 10 miles (16km) north-east of the state capital of Denver. Police vehicles and swat have swarmed the area, apparently looking for two people suspected of firing the weapons.

"This is a very heinous act", Avila said, adding that the motive was unknown.

Police first reported that gunshots had been fired around 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

"The employees started screaming".

Thornton police spokesman Victor Avila says the shooting appears to be random and there are no indications that it was an act of terror.

Two men died at the store, and the woman died at a hospital. No information has been released about the circumstances of the shooting or who was responsible for the gunfire.
