1 dead, 2 wounded in shooting at Chicago Starbucks

A shooting at a Starbucks Thursday night left one man dead and two other people injured.

The shootings occurred about 8:15 p.m.in the 4700 block of North Broadway Street, police said. The 12-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the groin. Police said the man who had been involved in the possible drug deal died at the scene. A second man sustained a gunshot wound to the body; police say he self-transported to Weiss Hospital, police said.

Their conditions are not known.

The man killed was identified Friday morning as 28-year-old Sauvignon Watkins of Chicago's Avalon Park neighborhood, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

It's not clear if the shooting happened inside the store.

Father-of-two Watkins was followed by the masked gunman who fatally shot him and wounded another man and the boy. "I grabbed my wife and kind of pushed her down and said, 'Shots!' Then there were three more, nearly within a few seconds", said Mike Swaiko, a witness. Another adult male was shot and is at Illinois Masonic Hospital in serious but stable condition.

"As far as we can tell, this was not a random act", Buslik said.

Police believe the deceased victim was the intended target and the other victims did not know the victim. A spokesperson for Starbucks said they are dismayed to hear about the gun violence and are working with law enforcement to obtain more information.

No one was in custody.
