Turn back the clock, check your smoke alarms

Keep in mind to set back your clocks, cell phones, and computers. That means pushing your clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night. The change marks a return to Central Standard Time.

A second petition was started earlier this year and collected close to five-thousand signatures.

The American Red Cross asks homeowners to perform smoke alarms maintenance this weekend as Daylight Savings Time ends. "There are, however, even more studies that tell us that the change itself can cause accidents, injuries and even deaths".

It's the law to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas.

According to Covey, having an updated smoke alarm can be the difference in saving someone's life if there's a fire.

"Working smoke alarms are the single most important tool in getting out alive during a fire", said Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Roger Parrino Sr.

Fire officials say it's time to change the batteries on those smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.

And if you don't have one, the Toledo Fire Department will give Toledo residents one, for free. Make sure your escape plan includes someone that can help children and others wake up immediately to escape from the home.

Batteries are removed due to a "chirping sound", which actually indicates the battery needs to be replaced!

Both hardwired and battery operated smoke alarms are required to be replaced every 10 years.
