The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson to create new Star Wars trilogy

When Colin Trevorrow was booted off Star Wars: Episode IX, a lot of people were surprised that Last Jedi director Rian Johnson wasn't hired as his replacement.

As viewers speculate what the Johnson Trilogy (as we're unofficially calling it) will be about, the timing of Lucasfilm's release is no coincidence.

Disney has chosen The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson to head development of an all-new Star Wars trilogy.

The first film will be written and directed by Johnson and though he may then turn over the reigns to someone new, he will still be there to shepherd the new trilogy as it progresses.

Initial information about the conditions of the injured - identified by authorities only as Chinese students - conflicted. The attack occurred in front of the Blagnac campus of the Institute for Social Research, an AFP journalist said.

In a joint statement, Johnson and Bergman said: "We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi". He will write and direct the first movie in the new trilogy, which Lucasfilm has not announced a timeline for. "Rian will do wonderful things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy", Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said in a statement.

The force of "Star Wars" lifted Walt Disney Co shares as the promise of a new film trilogy overshadowed disappointing quarterly results and struggles at the media company's television business.

We're nearly two movies into the third trilogy of the Star Wars saga but Disney is already gearing up for the next three films - and we don't mean the stand-alone ones. With the Star Wars universe as big as it is, there are so many directions the series could potentially take.

But a new trilogy will go beyond the original nine-film framework imagined by Lucas. Following that, Solo: A Star Wars Story, which was directed by Ron Howard and stars Alden Ehrenreich, is a stand-alone movie that will tell the story of a young Han Solo and will debut May 25, 2018.
