5 dead, 11 missing as tourist boat capsizes in Krishna near Vijayawada

Local fishermen swung into action and rescued 15 passengers, the Press Trust of India reported.

While six picnickers died after falling into the Ganga river in Vaishali, three women drowned in the Baghmati River when a boat capsized in Samastipur district, the officials had said.

"According to preliminary investigation, the private agency which was operating the boat did not have a license from the tourism department", he added.

Tragedy struck after a boat carrying 38 people capsized at Ferry Ghat in Ibrahimpatnam area of the city on Sunday evening.

The Deputy Chief Minister announced Rs five lakh ex-gratia to the families of each of the deceased.

They rescued 17 persons and fished out bodies of 21 persons along with NDRF, fire and police personnel.

Most of the passengers were said to be members of the Ongole Walkers Club in Prakasam district while some were from Nellore who were on a visit to Vijayawada.

Deputy chief minister N Chinna Rajappa said authorities are in the process of identifying the victims and investigating the incident as rescue crews search for the missing passengers.

Andhra Pradesh Congress committee president N Raghuveera Reddy visited the accident spot and later the hospital.
